How we choose resorts

Every resort on this list was checked twice

We travel the Carpathians and the Alps each season, then cross-check what we find against lift-operator reports and guest reviews from the last twelve months. Nothing enters the comparison table until the snow record, the transfer time and the total price per person have been confirmed in writing.

That means the numbers you see later on this page are ready to book, not brochure estimates. If a resort underperforms two winters in a row, it leaves the list.

Verification checks

01
Snow recordBase depth and open lift counts logged from December to March, not from a single good weekend.
02
Real transfer timeAirport to hotel measured on a winter Saturday, the busiest arrival day of the week.
03
Full priceLift pass, equipment and local taxes quoted together, so the figure is what you actually pay.

Season planning

Season and snow notes for every resort we sell

Snow reliability changes more between 900 m and 1,700 m than it does between countries. These notes tell you which weeks to book early, which weeks to avoid, and where the season still holds in late March.

Peak weeks to book early

New Year and Orthodox Christmas (2-8 January) fill first, then the February school break. Carpathian guesthouses in Bukovel and Slavske are usually gone by late October, and Alpine apartments by early November. If your dates are fixed, book those weeks first and pick the resort around them.

Snow reliability by destination

  • Dragobrat, Carpathians Dec - April Highest base in Ukraine at 1,400 m. Snow settles from early December and often lasts past Easter; the access road needs a 4x4 or the resort shuttle.
  • Bukovel, Carpathians Dec - March Snowmaking covers most blue and red runs, so a thin December still skis well. Slush appears low down in a warm March.
  • Dolomites, Italy Dec - early April The most consistent cover on our list and the longest lift network. Late March brings sun and quieter slopes.
  • Lower Austrian resorts Late Dec - early March A short window. Rain at valley level is normal in January, so choose these only if you are driving from Kyiv.

Safety on the slopes

Skiing is a hazardous sport. Insure the trip before you book the lift pass.

Downhill runs, variable snow and fast-changing mountain weather all carry risk. A fall, a collision or a twisted knee can end a holiday in an hour, and mountain rescue, a clinic visit or a helicopter transfer in the Carpathians or the Alps is expensive without cover.

We treat medical and travel insurance as part of the booking, not an afterthought. Buy a policy that names winter sports and off-piste cover if you plan to leave the marked runs, and check the excess, the altitude limit and the repatriation terms before you pay.

What a winter sports policy should cover

  • Emergency medical treatment, hospital stays and mountain rescue
  • Repatriation and evacuation, including helicopter transfer
  • Cancellation and curtailment if injury or illness stops the trip
  • Lost, stolen or damaged ski equipment, plus baggage delay
  • Third-party liability for accidents caused on the slopes

Insurance does not replace mountain safety rules. Follow the piste markers, respect closures and read the daily avalanche bulletin.
